Methven Lions are coordinating a community project in collaboration with ADC to upgrade, enhance and expand the walkways around Methven.
Existing sections are being upgraded and new sections constructed to create a network of walkways around the town. Native plants are being established along side some sections to further enhance the walkway. Fundraising is ongoing to pay for some of the materials, but the overall project is being made possible by many generous donations of time and materials by the local community and businesses.
Part of the walkway extension crosses the back of the cemetery.
The Methven Lions Club, in conjunction with Ashburton District Council, is undertaking a project to clean up the early graves and headstones in the Methven Cemetery.
We regard this as a mark of respect to those who have gone before us.
By “clean up” we mean spraying lichen and moss with Wet & Forget and gently removing lumps of moss by hand. No harsh chemicals. No abrasives. No water blasting. Just gentle removal. We will also add fresh shingle to graves where it  already exists, but has become thin or has subsided.
We will be restricting this to the early plots at the A&P Grounds end of the cemetery only. We will not treat newer or recently-renovated graves and headstones.
If any plot owner does NOT want this carried out, please write to us by July 1st 2021, clearly stating the plot number and name/names on headstones to avoid.
If we haven’t heard anything to the contrary by July 1st, we will assume agreement to our project, and press ahead.
